Mercedes-Benz C-Class 2022 review

Overview
The W206 Mercedes C-Class opened UK order books in late 2021 with first deliveries through 2022, and it landed with two headline facts: every UK engine was electrified from launch — all petrols and diesels carry a 48V EQ Boost mild-hybrid system — and the cabin borrows the W223 S-Class's tech wholesale. The C 200 Sport saloon started at £38,785 OTR, rising through AMG Line, AMG Line Premium and Premium Plus trims in both saloon and estate bodies.
The range plays to three audiences. The C 200's 1.5-litre petrol mild hybrid makes 204PS and 300Nm, hitting 62mph in 7.3 seconds with 41.5-44.1mpg WLTP. The C 220 d's 2.0 diesel mild hybrid answers with 200PS, 440Nm and 56.5-62.8mpg — the long-distance workhorse with up to 1,800kg of towing. The C 300 e plug-in hybrid is the clever one: a 25.4kWh battery and 129PS motor give 313PS combined, a 6.1-second sprint, up to 69 miles of WLTP electric range (65 in the estate), 11kW AC charging and 55kW DC rapid charging that refills it in about 30 minutes.
Inside, the 11.9-inch portrait MBUX touchscreen and 12.3-inch driver display are standard from Sport, and so are blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist and autonomous braking — unusually generous for the class. The saloon holds 455 litres of boot, the estate 490 (1,510 folded), although the C 300 e's battery cuts those to 315 and 360 litres. The W206 earned five Euro NCAP stars in 2022 (93% adult, 89% child, 80% vulnerable road users, 82% assist), and Mercedes' UK warranty runs 3 years with unlimited mileage plus 3 years of breakdown cover.
Used, the C 220 d AMG Line is the buy for most: proven OM654 diesel, 60mpg+, groups 33-36 and the full estate boot. The C 300 e only makes sense for drivers who can charge at home or work — its 8% Benefit-in-Kind and long electric range are real, but the compromised boot and steep new-car depreciation are the trade-offs. Note that AMG Line trim rides firmly on potholed British B-roads, and the touch-heavy cabin divides opinion.

Pros
- One of the longest 2022 PHEV electric ranges — many commuters can run a week on electrons
- S-Class-derived cabin gives big-Mercedes theatre for 3 Series money
- Unusually generous standard safety kit where rivals often charge extra
- C 220 d is the long-distance workhorse: 60mpg+, refined, 1,800kg towing
- 3-year unlimited-mileage warranty beats Audi's mileage-capped cover
Cons
- PHEV battery eats the boot: 360 litres in the estate is hatchback territory
- AMG Line rides firmly — thumps over potholed British B-roads where the W205 didn't
- Touch-heavy ergonomics: touchscreen climate and swipe steering pads fiddle on the move
- List prices ran ahead of the 3 Series and early W206 depreciation was sharper than the W205's
