Overview

The Carrera 3.2 is the sweet spot of air-cooled 911 ownership: the last of the truly analogue 911s before power steering and electronic aids arrived, with the bigger, torquier 3.2-litre engine and Bosch Motronic management that made the car both faster and more tractable than the 911 SC it replaced.

The driving experience is pure classic 911. The flat-six wails towards 6,000rpm, the unassisted steering weights up beautifully, and the rear-engined balance rewards smooth inputs. With 231PS in European trim, 0-60mph takes under six seconds and the top speed is 152mph — properly quick even today.

Buying well means paying for history. Engine rebuilds cost five figures, so a documented top-end rebuild is a plus rather than a worry. Check for accident damage, oil leaks, synchro wear in the 915 gearbox and the condition of the heat exchangers. Galvanised bodies resist rust well, but sills, kidney bowls and the windscreen surround still need inspection.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 1985 911 Carrera 3.2 worth?
A good usable UK coupe typically sells for £55,000-£70,000. Exceptional low-mileage cars exceed £85,000, while tired examples needing work start around £35,000.
What goes wrong on the 3.2 engine?
The bottom end is famously tough. Watch for worn valve guides (smoky exhaust), broken head studs on high-mileage cars, and oil leaks from the usual air-cooled spots. A rebuild costs £10,000+.
Is the 915 gearbox a problem?
It is a robust gearbox but the synchromesh wears, especially second gear. A crunch into second on the test drive means budgeting for a rebuild.
Should I buy a US import?
US cars are cheaper but have 207bhp versus 231bhp for European cars, plus bulkier bumpers. Factor in the power deficit when comparing prices.
Are they good investments?
The 3.2 has a strong record, but buy to drive and enjoy — maintenance, insurance and storage costs mean few owners truly profit.
