Overview

The Spitfire 1500 is Britain's affordable answer to open-top motoring: pretty Michelotti styling, a separate chassis that makes restoration straightforward, and prices that remain within reach of ordinary enthusiasts. By 1975 the 1.5-litre engine brought more torque, making the car far more drivable in modern traffic.

Do not expect speed — 71bhp gives 0-60mph in about 13 seconds — but do expect charm. The rack-and-pinion steering is precise, the gearbox is a delight with the optional overdrive, and with the hood down on a summer evening there are few better ways to spend £8,000.

The separate chassis is both blessing and curse: body-off restoration is easy, but the chassis itself rots. Check the outriggers, the rear suspension mounts and the sills. The 1500 engine's three-bearing crank needs regular oil changes, and overheating should never be ignored.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 1975 Spitfire worth?
A good usable Spitfire 1500 typically costs £7,000-£10,000. The best restored cars reach £12,000+, while projects can be found for £3,000-£4,000.
Is the 1500 engine reliable?
It is tougher than its reputation suggests if serviced properly — regular oil changes are critical for the three-bearing crank. Overheating and neglected valve clearances cause most failures.
What rust should I look for?
Chassis outriggers, rear suspension mounts, sills, floor pans and the bonnet's leading edge. A rotten chassis turns a bargain into a major project.
Overdrive — is it worth having?
Yes. Overdrive on third and fourth gears makes a real difference to relaxed cruising and is a desirable option that adds value.
Can I use it as a daily driver?
Some do in summer, but most owners treat them as fair-weather cars. Reliability is decent for a 1970s British car, but weather protection and security are minimal.
