Overview

The Volkswagen ID.7 is the brand's electric flagship: a sleek, aero-honed saloon that arrived in the UK in 2024 with the Pro Match model priced at £51,550. It is Volkswagen's answer to the BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3 — only bigger, roomier and longer-legged.

The powertrain centres on a 77 kWh usable (82 kWh gross) battery and a 286 hp rear motor with 545 Nm: 0–62 mph takes 6.5 seconds, top speed is 112 mph and official range is a mighty 383 miles. DC charging at up to 175 kW means long stops stay short.

At 4,961 mm long the ID.7 is limousine-sized, and the cabin feels it — vast rear legroom, a 532-litre boot and VW's new 15-inch infotainment with an augmented-reality head-up display. ErgoComfort seats with massage and a smart panoramic glass roof underline the upmarket brief. A Tourer estate version offers even more space.

It is expensive, and at 2,172 kg it is no sports saloon. But as a refined, long-range electric cruiser with genuine executive presence, the ID.7 makes the Tesla Model 3 feel small and the BMW i4 feel thirsty.

Frequently asked questions

What is the real-world range of the Volkswagen ID.7?
Around 300–330 miles in mixed driving — the 383-mile WLTP figure is optimistic but the ID.7 remains one of the longest-range EVs at any price. Gentle motorway cruising can exceed 350 miles in summer.
Should I buy the ID.7 saloon or the Tourer estate?
The Tourer costs a little more but adds a bigger, more versatile boot and a tailgate — the pick for families. The saloon is sleeker and slightly more efficient.
How fast does the ID.7 charge?
Up to 175 kW DC, taking the battery from 10 to 80% in under 30 minutes. A 7.4 kW home wallbox needs around 11–12 hours for a full charge.
Is the ID.7 a good company car?
One of the best: 2% benefit-in-kind, huge range for business miles and executive comfort. The £51,550 price is offset by strong predicted residuals.
How big is the ID.7?
At 4,961 mm long it is longer than a BMW 5 Series — check your parking space. The payoff is exceptional rear legroom and a 532-litre boot.
