It is cheaper than public charging, you wake up to a 'full tank' every morning, and you never have to visit a petrol station again. <h2>Your charging options at home</h2>
<p>There are three realistic ways to charge an EV at home:</p>

<li><strong>Three-pin 'granny' cable (2.3 kW)</strong> — plugs into a normal domestic socket and adds roughly 8 to 10 miles of range per hour. Fine as a backup or for plug-in hybrids, but too slow for regular use with a full EV, and prolonged use can strain old household wiring.</li>
<li><strong>Dedicated 7 kW wallbox</strong> — the standard choice for UK homes. professionally installed on its own circuit, it adds around 25 to 30 miles of range per hour, so a typical EV charges fully overnight in 6 to 9 hours.</li>
<li><strong>22 kW three-phase charger</strong> — only worthwhile if your property has a three-phase electricity supply (rare in UK homes) and your car supports it. Most drivers should stick with 7 kW.</li>

<h2>How much does installation cost?</h2>
<p>A 7 kW home chargepoint typically costs between £800 and £1,200 fully installed, including the unit, labour, cabling and certification. The final price depends on how far your consumer unit (fuse box) is from the parking spot and whether any electrical upgrades are needed. Popular units from brands like Ohme, Pod Point, Wallbox and Hypervolt all include smart features such as scheduled charging and solar integration. <h2>Grants and financial help</h2>
<p>Government support for home chargers has changed over the years. The old Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme for homeowners has closed, but the EV chargepoint grant currently offers up to £350 off installation for renters and flat owners, as well as landlords and workplaces. <p>Set a maximum charge limit of 80 percent for daily use — most manufacturers recommend this to protect long-term battery health, saving 100 percent for long trips. Pre-condition the cabin while the car is still plugged in on cold mornings so you do not waste battery range on heating. Keep the granny cable in the boot as an emergency backup. And if your household runs two EVs, consider a dual-socket charger or load-balancing unit so both cars can share the available supply without overloading your fuse box.</p>
<h2>Is home charging worth it?</h2>
<p>For anyone with off-street parking, absolutely. A £1,000 charger typically pays for itself within a year or two through fuel savings alone — a driver covering 10,000 miles a year might spend £200 on home electricity versus £1,500 on petrol. Add the convenience of never visiting a filling station and the ability to pre-heat the car on frosty mornings, and home charging is the upgrade that makes electric motoring genuinely effortless.</p><h2>What about charging without a driveway?</h2><p>Around four in ten UK households have no off-street parking, but options are growing. Many councils now permit pavement cable channels so you can run a cable safely from your home charger to the kerb, and lamppost and bollard chargers are appearing on residential streets. Workplace charging is another strong option — ask your employer, as grants exist for businesses too.
