How to check a used car before buying in the UK
1. HPI check — outstanding finance, write-offs, stolen markers.
2. MOT history — free on GOV.UK, look for recurring advisories.
3. Service history — stamps or digital records, ideally main dealer.
4. Tyres and brakes — uneven wear hints at alignment or suspension issues.
5. Test drive — cold start, listen for knocks, check every button works.
6. V5C logbook — name and address must match the seller.
Never buy at night, never pay cash without a receipt, and walk away if the seller rushes you.
