Volkswagen ID. Tiguan confirmed for October 2026 debut

1 October 2026

Volkswagen has confirmed that its best-selling nameplate is going electric. The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan — a new battery-electric SUV that will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 — will be fully revealed in early October 2026, with first UK and European deliveries expected in early 2027.

The announcement, made by Volkswagen on 28 September, is the latest move in the German manufacturer's strategy of giving its electric cars familiar model names instead of ID numbers. The ID. Tiguan follows the forthcoming ID. Polo and ID. Cross, with an electric ID. Golf expected to join them in the coming years.

A familiar name for the electric era

Volkswagen is betting that recognisable badges will sell electric cars better than model numbers. The logic is easy to follow: the Tiguan is the company's biggest global seller. More than 8.3 million have been produced since the model launched in 2007, and the Tiguan and its larger sibling the Tayron generated more than one million deliveries between them in the past year alone. The outgoing ID.4 and ID.5, launched from 2020, have found more than 950,000 buyers worldwide.

"More than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles produced demonstrate the strength and trust associated with this model name," said Thomas Schäfer, chief executive of the Volkswagen brand. "The Tiguan represents a versatile, premium vehicle and embodies the essence of True Volkswagen. With the ID. Tiguan, we are carrying this product promise into the electric future."

Crucially, the ID. Tiguan will not kill off the conventional Tiguan. Volkswagen has confirmed the petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions will continue to be sold alongside the electric model, so buyers can pick the powertrain that suits them under the same trusted badge.

What we know so far

Volkswagen has so far released only camouflaged preview images of what it calls a near-production concept. Full technical details — battery sizes, driving range, charging speeds, motor outputs and UK prices — remain under wraps until the reveal. What is confirmed:

- The ID. Tiguan will be built on Volkswagen's latest MEB+ electric-car platform.
- Volkswagen describes it as a near-production vehicle rather than a distant concept, and says it will have the visual presence of a car from the segment above.
- The company promises a completely new design, premium materials, generous space and more intuitive controls.
- Reports suggest single-motor and dual-motor (all-wheel-drive) versions with a choice of battery chemistries, but Volkswagen has not confirmed any of this.

UK motoring site Cars UK, which has followed the car closely, describes the ID. Tiguan as effectively a heavily reworked ID.4 wearing styling inspired by the ID.3 Neo. It expects the cabin to bring higher-quality materials and proper physical buttons for frequently used functions — a direct answer to one of the most common criticisms of today's ID models.

Why it matters for UK buyers

The Tiguan is one of the most familiar sights on British roads, and its electric sibling arrives at a pivotal moment. With the UK's zero-emission vehicle mandate tightening year on year and company-car drivers hunting for practical, long-range EVs, a sensibly priced Tiguan-badged electric SUV could be one of 2027's most important launches. The combination of a trusted name, family-sized space and — if Volkswagen delivers on its promises — a big step up in quality could make the ID. Tiguan a serious rival to the established electric family SUVs.

Rivals are not standing still. Fleet and Mobility Live 2026 at the NEC Birmingham on 6-7 October will put several competing electric SUVs in front of fleet buyers just days before the ID. Tiguan's full reveal, giving the industry an early read on the competition.

Frequently asked questions

**Will the electric ID. Tiguan replace the petrol Tiguan?**
No. Volkswagen has confirmed the petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid Tiguan will continue to be sold alongside the ID. Tiguan, so you can choose between electric and conventional power.

**When will the ID. Tiguan go on sale in the UK?**
Volkswagen says the ID. Tiguan will make its world debut in early October 2026 and reach markets, including the UK, in early 2027. UK prices and an order date have not been announced yet.

**What range and charging speeds will it offer?**
Volkswagen has not disclosed battery sizes, range or charging figures yet. Those details — along with UK pricing — will be confirmed at the October reveal.

**Is the ID. Tiguan just a renamed ID.4?**
