3 Series: yearly fuel cost
Premium saloon running costs are never pocket money, and the 2024 BMW 3 Series is no exception: 8,000 miles a year at £1.45 per litre works out to roughly £1,199 in petrol — about £100 a month, or £23 a week. Its combined figure of around 44 mpg matches the saloon segment average of 44.0 mpg in our 20-car dataset exactly (the only saloon in the sample, so it sets its own benchmark), delivered alongside roughly 184 hp and a brisk 7.1-second 0–62 time. Over five years, fuel totals around £6,000. That is the price of entry for rear-wheel-drive BMW performance — acceptable for the badge and the drive, but the hybrids and superminis in this list show how much cheaper motoring can be.
The WLTP laboratory cycle is kind to the 3 Series: real-world owners typically see 40–42 mpg in mixed driving against the ~44 mpg claim, with enthusiastic B-road driving and cold starts pulling it lower. Petrol-saving discipline for a BMW means resisting the Sport mode temptation on the commute, using Eco Pro for motorway slogs, and keeping cruising speeds at 70 mph — the 3 Series is deceptively quick at building speed, and speed is what drinks fuel. Monthly tyre-pressure checks and a boot clear-out help too. Verdict: the 3 Series asks a fair fuel price for its performance; drive it like a cruiser rather than a sports car and the official figure stays in sight. Premium fuel is not required, so there is no need to pay extra at the pump for branding.
