Qashqai: yearly fuel cost
Few family SUVs stretch a tank as far as the 2024 Nissan Qashqai. With its hybrid powertrain claiming 53.3 mpg (WLTP combined), an 8,000-mile year at £1.45 per litre costs roughly £989 — about £82 a month, or £19 a week. That is well ahead of the SUV segment average of 44.3 mpg across our 20-car sample, making the Qashqai one of the most frugal SUVs on sale relative to its class. You also get 190 PS and a 7.9-second 0–62 time, so the economy does not come at the expense of pace. Five years of fuel adds up to roughly £4,950 — nearly £1,500 less than a thirstier petrol SUV over the same period, a saving that shows up directly in your household budget.
Hybrid WLTP figures hold up better in real life than pure-petrol ones, but there is still a gap: most Qashqai owners report 49–51 mpg in mixed driving versus the 53.3 mpg claim, with town driving often matching or beating the official figure thanks to the electric motor. To maximise the hybrid advantage, brake early and gently so the regenerative system harvests energy, glide off the throttle before junctions instead of braking late, and keep town speeds steady so the car stays in electric mode longer. Verdict: the Qashqai is a genuine fuel-bill champion among family SUVs — drive it smoothly and the official figure is genuinely within reach. Using Eco mode as your default and keeping the air-con at moderate settings rather than maximum also help the hybrid stay in electric running for longer stretches of every journey.
