Overview

The Volkswagen Golf GTI invented the hot hatchback nearly fifty years ago, and the 2024 Mk8.5 model shows the formula is still devastatingly effective. With 265PS from its 2.0-litre TSI engine, the GTI delivers genuinely rapid pace, 0-60 mph in under six seconds, wrapped in a package that remains as usable as any family hatch. The facelift brought a larger touchscreen, illuminated touch sliders and the return of physical steering-wheel buttons, answering owners' biggest complaints. On the road it is the complete performance all-rounder: the front differential pulls it out of corners, the adaptive dampers deliver both comfort and control, and the exhaust note has real character in Sport mode. Yet it will still return nearly 40 mpg on a cruise and seat five in comfort, with the famous tartan sports seats. Running costs are higher than a standard Golf, insurance sits in the upper groups and tyres are pricey, but residuals are strong. Rivals are faster on paper, but none blend everyday usability with driver appeal quite like the GTI. It remains the default answer to the hot hatch question.
