Boot Space

Motoring glossary

Boot space — quoted in litres — is the luggage capacity measured to the window line with the rear seats up, and again with them folded. It’s a useful comparison tool but an imperfect one: manufacturers measure slightly differently, and a tall narrow boot can quote well yet swallow less than a lower, squarer one. For reference, ~300 litres is a supermini, ~500 an estate, and anything over 600 is properly cavernous.

Example

A folded pram needs roughly 400+ litres — which is why 350-litre superminis frustrate new parents.
