Towing Capacity

Motoring glossary

Towing capacity is the maximum trailer weight a car is type-approved to pull, quoted as braked (trailer has its own brakes — the big number) and unbraked (typically 750 kg). Never exceed it: it’s a legal limit, not advice, and insurers can refuse claims. As a rule of thumb, caravanners aim for the laden caravan to be no more than 85% of the car’s kerb weight for stable towing.

Example

A diesel SUV with a 2,000 kg braked limit comfortably tows a 1,500 kg caravan; a small hatchback rated at 1,000 kg does not.
