Kerb Weight

Motoring glossary

Kerb weight is how much the car weighs ready to drive: all fluids, a full tank of fuel and standard equipment, but no passengers or luggage (the EU adds a 75 kg driver to the figure). It’s the baseline for everything dynamic — acceleration, braking, handling — and for towing math. Electric cars are notably heavier than petrol equivalents because batteries are dense: often 300–500 kg more.

Example

A 1,400 kg hatchback with 150 bhp feels lively; the same power in a 2,200 kg electric SUV feels merely adequate.
