MOT
The MOT is the UK’s annual roadworthiness test for cars over three years old, checking safety-critical items: brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, emissions and the car’s structure. It costs at most £54.85 for a car (2026 cap) and you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without one. It’s a minimum safety standard, not a service — a pass doesn’t mean the car needs nothing doing.
Example
The most common MOT failures are dead bulbs, worn tyres and tired wipers — all cheap DIY fixes before the test.
