V5C

Motoring glossary

The V5C — still widely called the logbook — is the DVLA document recording a vehicle’s registered keeper, registration number, VIN and key details. Crucially, it is not proof of ownership: it only shows who is responsible for taxing the car. When buying used, check the V5C’s VIN matches the car, the keeper’s address looks plausible, and there are no “duplicate” or finance markers that hint at trouble.

Example

Never buy a car without seeing the V5C — and be wary if the seller’s name doesn’t match the keeper named on it.
