Clio: yearly fuel cost
The 2024 Renault Clio hybrid is the supermini that embarrasses cars twice its price at the pumps: claiming 64.2 mpg combined, it costs roughly £821 a year to fuel at 8,000 miles and £1.45 per litre — about £68 a month, or £15.80 a week. That crushes the hatchback segment average of 53.9 mpg across our 20-car sample, making the Clio the most economical non-Yaris car here, and it still offers 145 PS with a 9.3-second 0–62 sprint. Five years of fuel adds up to around £4,105 — less than many rivals spend in four. If you want the absolute lowest fuel bills without going electric, the Clio hybrid belongs at the very top of your shortlist. Few superminis make this strong a case.
Few cars are as honest as the Clio hybrid about economy: owners regularly report 60–63 mpg in mixed real-world driving against the 64.2 mpg WLTP claim, and careful urban drivers can exceed it. The E-Tech system loves town work, so the winning formula is gentle acceleration, early regenerative braking, and steady low speeds that keep the electric motor in play. On faster roads, 65 mph cruising preserves the magic; 80 mph dilutes it. Verdict: the Clio hybrid delivers near-brochure economy with minimal effort — it is quite simply one of the cheapest petrol-powered cars in Britain to run. Keeping the hybrid system serviced on schedule, running correct tyre pressures, and filling up at supermarkets rather than pricey motorway forecourts all protect the Clio's remarkable economy over the years.
