Overview

The Renault Clio has been a fixture of British driveways for over three decades, and the facelifted 2024 model keeps it right at the sharp end of the supermini class. With the Ford Fiesta gone from showrooms, the Clio's blend of style, efficiency and value matters more than ever, and the E-Tech hybrid version is now the star of the range.

The 1.6-litre E-Tech full hybrid pairs a petrol engine with two electric motors for 145PS and remarkable economy: officially over 64mpg, with high-50s achievable in everyday UK driving. Around town it runs on electricity far more often than most rival hybrids, making it whisper-quiet in traffic and cheap to run. The multi-mode automatic gearbox can occasionally hesitate when cold, but it settles into smooth, relaxed progress once warm.

Inside, the Clio feels a class above its price, with Google built-in on the portrait touchscreen and a smart digital driver display. The trade-off is space: the hybrid's 301-litre boot is small for the class and rear legroom is tight for adults. As a stylish, frugal runabout for couples and small families, though, the Clio is very hard to beat.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Renault Clio E-Tech hybrid worth it?
If most of your miles are town and suburban driving, yes: it runs on electric power far more often than rival hybrids and sips fuel. High-mileage motorway drivers may prefer the cheaper TCe petrol version instead.
How does the E-Tech gearbox work?
It uses a clutchless multi-mode automatic, with electric motors filling the torque gaps between ratios. It is smooth most of the time but can pause briefly when pulling away cold.
What is the real-world MPG of the Clio hybrid?
Expect 55 to 60 mpg in mixed use, and 60-plus mpg is easy in town driving. Fast motorway work at 70 mph drops it into the high-40s.
Is the Clio reliable?
The Clio V scores around average in UK owner surveys. The hybrid powertrain is shared with the Captur and Juke and has proven dependable, and Renault offers an extended 5-year warranty option for peace of mind.
