BMW 1 Series 2016 review
Overview
The 2016 BMW 1 Series is the facelifted F20 — the LCI, unveiled at the 2015 Geneva show — and it matters because this is the last rear-wheel-drive 1 Series. BMW switched the next generation to front-wheel drive, so the F20 LCI is the final chance to own the classic small-BMW formula: longitudinal engine, rear-driven wheels and near-perfect weight balance in a premium hatchback package.
Diesels dominate the used market. The 116d uses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel with 114bhp, 270Nm and a remarkable 78mpg official figure — Parkers lists the 2016 116d SE Nav 3dr at £22,195 when new. The 2.0-litre B47-powered 118d (150bhp, 320Nm, 0–60mph in 8.0 seconds, 68mpg) is the sweet spot, while the 120d''s 190bhp and 400Nm deliver 6.8-second pace with 65mpg. Petrols run from the 136bhp 1.5-litre 118i to the 326bhp M135i flagship. Six-speed manual is standard, BMW''s superb eight-speed automatic optional.
Trims were SE, Sport and M Sport, and the 2016 range opened at £22,195 for the 116d SE, rising to £24,340 for a 118d Sport and £26,320 for a 120d Sport. Every car got LED headlights, DAB radio, Bluetooth and air conditioning; Nav trims added the Professional navigation system, and M Sport brought the body kit, sports seats and firmer suspension. The 360-litre boot and five-star Euro NCAP rating (2012 test) keep it practical and safe, backed by BMW''s three-year/unlimited-mileage warranty.
The essential used check is the EGR cooler recall: BMW recalled diesel models over a cooler defect that could cause coolant leaks and, in rare cases, fire — verify completion by VIN on the DVSA recall checker. The B47 is far better than the old N47 for timing chains, but still listen for rattle and insist on quality oil changes; short-trip diesels risk DPF and EGR clogging, and tired batteries cause a cascade of electronic niggles on these cars.
