Overview

The third-generation BMW 1 Series — the F40, on sale from September 2019 — committed the heresy BMW purists feared: it ditched rear-wheel drive for front-wheel drive. Built on the UKL2 platform shared with the MINI, it gained 33mm of rear legroom and a boot up 20 litres to 380, at the cost of the old car's handling balance. The 118i opened at £24,430.

The UK range centres on the 1.5 three-cylinder 118i (140bhp, 0-62 in 8.5 seconds, up to 49.6mpg), with the 2.0 diesel 118d (150bhp, around 60mpg) for high-mileage drivers, the 120d xDrive (190bhp, all-wheel drive) and the M135i xDrive flagship: 306bhp, 450Nm and 0-62 in 4.8 seconds from £36,430.

The F40 earned five Euro NCAP stars in October 2019 and carries BMW's three-year unlimited-mileage warranty. It remains one of the sharpest-driving hatches in its class, even if enthusiasts say it lost some of the old car's steering feel.

Used values in 2026 start around £11,000–£13,000 for early 118is and £17,000–£20,000 for the M135i. All 2020 cars are out of factory warranty now, so insist on full BMW or specialist service history. Check iDrive 7 is running current software, diesels have motorway miles behind them, and M135is are unmodified — mapped cars and worn 360mm M brakes are the red flags.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2020 1 Series really front-wheel drive?
Yes. The F40 (launched September 2019) switched to front-wheel drive on BMW's UKL2 platform, shared with the MINI. It gains rear legroom and a bigger 380-litre boot, and remains one of the sharpest-driving hatches in its class — though enthusiasts say it lost some of the old rear-drive car's steering feel. The 120d and M135i get xDrive all-wheel drive.
M135i xDrive vs rivals — worth it used?
With 306bhp, 450Nm and 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds from £36,430 new, the M135i is rapid and refined — but widely judged slightly less engaging than a Golf R or Civic Type R. As a used buy it is a lot of pace and kit for the money, provided you find an unmodified example with full BMW service history.
Is the diesel 1 Series still worth it in 2026?
The 118d does around 60mpg WLTP and the 120d xDrive adds all-wheel drive, but diesels only pay off with regular motorway miles — the DPF needs long runs to regenerate and AdBlue top-ups are required. For short urban trips the 118i petrol (up to ~50mpg) is the safer used choice. All are Euro 6, so ULEZ compliant.
How reliable is a used 2020 1 Series?
The B38/B47 engines are proven across the BMW and MINI range and generally regarded as solid. Watch for iDrive 7 software glitches (usually fixed by a dealer update), diesel DPF/EGR issues on short-trip cars, low-speed shunt from the 7-speed DCT on auto 118is, and run-flat tyre and brake wear costs on M Sport and M135i models. No F40-specific DVSA safety recall was found — verify by VIN.
What should I check before buying a 2020 1 Series?
Full BMW (or specialist) service history with condition-based service stamps; iDrive software up to date; diesel DPF/AdBlue health and motorway usage history; on the M135i, check for remaps and M-brake wear; tyre condition (run-flats are expensive); MOT history for suspension wear; and confirm no outstanding recalls via the gov.uk DVSA recall checker.
