Nissan Qashqai 2014 — front three-quarter view

Overview

The second-generation Qashqai, codenamed J11, reached UK showrooms in January 2014, built at Nissan Sunderland, and it went on to become Britain best-selling crossover. The 1.2 DIG-T 115 Acenta is the launch volume petrol: the engine most early buyers actually chose, priced at £19,145 on the road at launch. The old seven-seat Qashqai+2 was dropped, so every J11 is a five-seater, and the 1.6 DIG-T 163 petrol did not arrive until autumn 2014.

Its 1,197cc turbocharged petrol makes 115 PS and 190 Nm, reaching 62 mph in 10.9 seconds. Official economy was 50.4 mpg combined on the old NEDC test, with 129 g/km of CO2, which put it in VED Band D under the pre-April 2017 system, and the 55-litre tank gives a theoretical range of around 605 miles. The six-speed manual is standard; the Xtronic CVT automatic only arrived in September 2014, so an early 64-plate car is normally a manual.

Space is a Qashqai strength. The boot holds 430 litres with the seats up and 1,585 litres with them folded, and the rear seats split 60/40 with a near-flat floor. Acenta trim brings 17-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, automatic lights and wipers, and the Luggage Board system for a flat load floor. The car carries a five-star Euro NCAP rating from the 2014 test, with 88 percent for adult occupants.

As a used buy, the checks are specific and serious. Early 1.2 DIG-T engines can burn oil through faulty piston rings and valve seals, with some owners reporting up to a litre per 1,000 km, and the timing chain can stretch and rattle on cold starts if oil starvation has affected the tensioner. Nissan issued no recall for this, so check the oil level and listen from cold. Verify the recalls that do exist by VIN, including R/2016/157 for the rear oxygen sensor and R/2014/157 for towbar bolts, and remember a 2014 car is always pre-facelift: the facelift arrived for the September 2017 plate change.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2014 Nissan Qashqai 1.2 DIG-T reliable?
Mostly yes, but the early 1.2 DIG-T is the weak engine in the range. Check oil consumption and listen for a timing-chain rattle on a cold start, and buy only with full service history.
What is the oil consumption problem on the 1.2 DIG-T?
Early engines can burn oil through faulty piston rings and valve seals, with some owners reporting up to around a litre per 1,000 km. Low oil can also starve the timing-chain tensioner, so check the dipstick before every viewing.
Which recalls affect the 2014 Qashqai?
Recall R/2016/157 covers the rear oxygen sensor and recall R/2014/157 covers towbar bolted joints. Check any car by VIN on the GOV.UK recall checker before buying.
How big is the boot on the 2014 Qashqai?
430 litres with the seats up and 1,585 litres with them folded, which is generous for a family crossover of this size.
Is the 2014 Qashqai ULEZ compliant?
Yes. The 1.2 DIG-T petrol is Euro 6, so it is compliant with London ULEZ and clean air zones. Verify the individual car on the TfL checker by registration, as always.
