Overview
The Omoda 5 was the car that launched Chery's Omoda brand in the UK, going on sale from £25,235 as a cheaper alternative to the British-built Nissan Qashqai. It shares its underpinnings and 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with its Jaecoo cousins, but wears a bolder, more fashion-forward design.
The 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder produces 186PS and 275Nm, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. It is the quickest of the Chery petrol family in a straight line, covering 0–62mph in 7.9 seconds, though the official 31.2mpg and around 170g/km of CO2 are on the thirsty side — and insurance groups 32D–33D are steep.
Two trims are offered: Comfort and Noble. Even the entry car is loaded: 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, twin digital displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging (with a cooling fan), an eight-speaker Sony sound system, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, front and rear parking sensors and a full ADAS suite. The extra £1,800 for Noble adds a 360-degree camera, power sunroof, power tailgate, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and air purification.
An all-electric E5 is sold alongside it. The petrol 5 is not the most refined or best-built car in its class, but few rivals offer this much pace and kit for £25,000 — and the seven-year/100,000-mile warranty plus a year's RAC cover sweeten the deal.
