Overview

The Skoda Karoq is the thinking family's SUV: not the flashiest, but one of the smartest buys in the class. Based on proven Volkswagen Group mechanicals, it majors on space, quality and value. The 1.5 TSI petrol with 150PS is the sweet spot — smooth, flexible and economical — while a 2.0 TDI diesel suits high-mileage drivers and a 2.0 TSI with four-wheel drive tops the range.

Practicality is where the Karoq truly shines. The 588-litre boot (with rear seats slid forward) is enormous for the class, and the clever VarioFlex seating system lets you remove the individual rear seats entirely for van-like carrying capacity. Rear legroom is generous, the cabin is trimmed in durable, well-fitted materials, and visibility is excellent all round.

The dashboard centres on an 8-inch or 9.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a digital driver display on higher trims. Trims run SE Drive, SE L and SportLine, all generously equipped with dual-zone climate, adaptive cruise and heated seats. Rivals include the SEAT Ateca, Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage. Low running costs, cheap parts, strong reliability and excellent residuals complete a thoroughly rational — and quietly appealing — package.

Frequently asked questions

What are VarioFlex seats on the Skoda Karoq?
VarioFlex is Skoda's clever removable rear-seat system: three individual seats that slide, recline and can be taken out entirely. With them removed, load space grows to 1,810 litres — van-like capacity no rival can match. It is standard on SE L and SportLine trims.
Is the Skoda Karoq reliable?
Yes — the Karoq scores well in UK owner satisfaction and reliability surveys. Its VW Group engines are proven, parts are affordable and widely available, and Skoda dealers are consistently rated among the best for customer service.
Manual or DSG — which Karoq gearbox is best?
The 6-speed manual is cheaper, slightly more economical and suits keen drivers. The 7-speed DSG automatic is smoother in traffic and better for towing, but needs an oil and filter service every 40,000 miles (around £190 in parts) to stay healthy.
Is the Skoda Karoq good for towing?
Yes, particularly the 2.0 TDI diesel or 2.0 TSI petrol with four-wheel drive, which tow up to 2,000kg braked. The 1.5 TSI petrol manages around 1,500kg — fine for a small caravan or trailer. The DSG gearbox option makes towing noticeably easier.
