Overview

The bZ4X is Toyota's first purpose-built electric car — the 'bZ' stands for 'beyond Zero' — and this mid-size SUV arrived in the UK with prices starting from £42,860 for the Pure front-wheel-drive model. Developed alongside the Subaru Solterra, it brings Toyota's reputation for durability to the electric family-SUV class.

The front-wheel-drive Pure uses a 71.4 kWh battery and a 201 bhp motor: 0–62 mph takes 7.5 seconds, top speed is 100 mph and official range is 277 miles. DC charging peaks at 150 kW. An all-wheel-drive version with dual motors is also available for drivers who want extra traction.

Inside you get Toyota's latest 12.3-inch infotainment, a full suite of Toyota Safety Sense 3 driver aids and a practical, airy cabin with a flat floor. Toyota backs the bZ4X with its usual strong warranty and a battery-care programme aimed at keeping 90% capacity after 10 years.

Rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.4, Nissan Ariya and Skoda Enyaq charge faster and go further on paper. But for buyers who value Toyota's reliability record and dealer network above headline numbers, the bZ4X is a dependable, comfortable choice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the real-world range of the Toyota bZ4X?
Around 220–240 miles in mixed UK driving for the front-wheel-drive model. Cold winter weather can pull that below 200 miles; gentle summer driving can exceed 250.
Should I get the front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive bZ4X?
The FWD Pure is cheaper, lighter and goes further (277 miles officially). Choose AWD only if you regularly need extra traction — for most UK buyers the FWD car is the sweet spot.
How fast does the bZ4X charge?
Up to 150 kW DC, for a 10–80% charge in around 30 minutes. That is slower than Hyundai/Kia rivals, so check it suits your long-trip habits.
How long will the bZ4X battery last?
Toyota's battery-care programme aims to retain 90% capacity after 10 years or 150,000 miles with annual battery health checks — one of the strongest assurances in the industry.
Can the bZ4X tow?
Yes — the bZ4X is rated to tow up to 750 kg braked, enough for a small trailer, though towing will cut range significantly.
