BHP

Motoring glossary

Brake horsepower is the traditional British measure of engine power — the power at the engine’s crankshaft before drivetrain losses, measured on a dynamometer (“brake”). More bhp generally means higher top speed and faster acceleration, but it’s only half the story: torque, weight and gearing decide how fast a car actually feels. Most of the world now quotes metric PS instead, which is near-identical (1 bhp ≈ 1.014 PS).

Example

A 150 bhp family hatchback hits 60 mph in around 9 seconds; 300 bhp in the same body drops that to about 6.
