PS

Motoring glossary

PS stands for Pferdestärke — German for “horse strength” — and is the metric horsepower figure quoted on almost all new cars sold in the UK and Europe. One PS equals 0.986 bhp, so the two are near-identical in practice: a 150 PS car is a 148 bhp car. Manufacturers switched to PS as specs harmonised across Europe; our reviews quote whichever figure the maker publishes.

Example

A “204 PS” electric motor is quoted as roughly 201 bhp — the difference is rounding, not performance.
