Overview
The Renault 4 is back — and like the Renault 5 before it, the reboot is electric. The original 4L sold more than eight million copies between 1961 and 1994, and this modern homage keeps its cheerful spirit: a tall, practical crossover with a full-length retractable fabric roof, built at Renault's historic Maubeuge plant in France.
UK buyers get one proven powertrain: a 52 kWh battery with a 148 bhp motor driving the front wheels, for 0–62 mph in 8.2 seconds, a 93 mph top speed and up to 247 miles of official range. DC rapid charging peaks at 100 kW (15–80% in 30 minutes), there is an 11 kW AC charger, and a heat pump comes standard to protect winter range. Trims run Evolution (£26,995), Techno (£28,995) and Iconic (£30,995).
At 4.14 metres long it is compact outside yet roomy inside, with a 420-litre boot that embarrasses larger rivals. The cabin mixes retro charm — an illuminated one-piece grille, denim-effect recycled upholstery — with modern tech: a 10.1-inch Google-based infotainment system with built-in Maps, 26 driver-assistance systems and an optional Harman Kardon sound system.
Named TopGear.com's Electric Car of the Year 2025, the 4 E-Tech squares up to the Citroen e-C3 Aircross, Vauxhall Frontera and Ford Puma Gen-E. For families wanting an EV with personality rather than another grey blob, it is a breath of fresh air.
