PHEV

Motoring glossary

A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle pairs a petrol or diesel engine with a battery big enough to drive 20–60 miles on electricity alone, charged from the mains. Used as intended — charged nightly, short trips on electric — running costs can be tiny; never plugged in, it’s just a heavy, thirsty hybrid. PHEVs attract low company-car tax, which is why fleets love them.

Example

A PHEV with 40 miles of real electric range covers the average UK commute on electricity if charged at home overnight.
