Overview

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is the 'electrified streamliner' — a swooping four-door saloon on Hyundai's E-GMP platform that trades SUV bulk for aerodynamic efficiency. With a drag coefficient of just 0.21, the 77.4kWh rear-drive model delivers up to 338 miles of WLTP range: the best in its class and enough to embarrass far pricier rivals.

That efficiency pairs with 800-volt charging hardware. On a 350kW DC charger the Ioniq 6 goes from 10–80% in around 18 minutes — the fastest charging of any mainstream EV at its price. The 228PS rear motor covers 0–62mph in 7.4 seconds, while the 325PS all-wheel-drive version cuts that to 5.1 seconds.

UK prices started at £46,745 for the Premium RWD, rising through Ultimate trim to £53,745 for the AWD flagship. Every UK car got the 77.4kWh battery — Hyundai never sold the smaller 53kWh version in Britain. Standard kit is strong: 20-inch alloys, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with three years of Bluelink connected services, heated front and rear seats, a full SmartSense driver-assistance suite, a heat pump, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) that can run a laptop or even charge another EV from a three-pin socket.

Safety is a highlight: five Euro NCAP stars with Best in Class 2022 for large family cars. The trade-offs are a modest 401-litre boot behind a saloon tailgate, limited rear headroom under the curved roofline, and insurance groups of 37E to 41E. But with a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty, 2% benefit-in-kind and running costs a fraction of a petrol saloon's, the Ioniq 6 is one of the smartest electric buys of 2024.
