Overview
The fifth-generation Hyundai Santa Fe is a clean-sheet reinvention: gone is the sleek crossover, in comes a bold, boxy SUV with unmistakable Land Rover overtones. For the UK it is hybrid-only, opening with the 1.6 Hybrid 215 PS 2WD Premium at £46,775.
The powertrain pairs a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor for 215 PS through a six-speed automatic gearbox. Hyundai quotes 38–42 mpg depending on specification; independent testing of the front-wheel-drive car returned 38.1 mpg with 168 g/km of CO2. All-wheel-drive versions add traction at the cost of a little economy.
Seven seats come as standard, and the boxy shape pays dividends inside: a huge, square boot, a third row that adults can use for shorter trips, and a Land Rover-style cabin with twin 12.3-inch curved displays. It feels a class above the old car.
Rivals include the Kia Sorento, Skoda Kodiaq and Land Rover Discovery Sport. The Santa Fe is the style-led choice — pricier than before, but far more desirable, and the hybrid system keeps running costs sane for such a big SUV.
